Local Control of Prevailing Wage

I will work to restore local control over prevailing wage. Local cities and counties should be able to decide if contractors working on taxpayer-funded projects must pay the going wage for that type of work in their community. Right now, Kansas law limits local governments from requiring higher wages or benefits on many construction and infrastructure projects. I believe local tax dollars should support local, good-paying jobs, and those decisions should be made by the communities paying for the work.

Making Life More Affordable

I work for a living and I know what its like to struggle to make ends meet. Everyday Kansans need a voice in Topeka that will show up and work for them. One change or policy isn't going to cut it, but I have some ideas. For one, we can expand the state sales tax exclusion on food to include diapers, period products, and over-the-counter medication. We should expand the Homestead Property Tax Refund to help working families stay in their homes and help single family homeowners afford repairs to older homes. Renters need stronger rights. Every piece of legislation has an impact on our pocket books. Read on to see where I stand on major issues.

A Strong Local Economy:

I will work towards building a strong local economy by raising the minimum wage. The minimum wage has not been raised since 2009. The cost of a hamburger in Missouri is the same as in Kansas, but they have $15 minimum wage. By raising the minimum wage, consumers will have more purchasing power to support local businesses.

Taxes

I will work to lower taxes, not just put a cap on them. Legislators need to look at ways to cut spending. We need to look at ways to bring in other tax revenue and not keep relying on residential owners to keep footing the bill. We could legalize cannabis and use the taxes to help lower property taxes. Too much of Kansans money is leaving to neighboring states that have legal cannabis. We need to keep our money here in Kansas. Seniors and working families should not be taxed out of their homes.

Affordable Healthcare for All

We need to expand Medicaid to keep rural hospitals from shutting down. If rural hospitals close, Kansans will have to travel greater distances for healthcare. Every Kansan needs access to healthcare no matter where they choose to live.

Legalize Marijuana

Its time to legalize cannabis, both medicinal and recreational, so that we can keep Kansas dollars in Kansas and reduce the cost of enforcement.

Fully Funding Public Education

I will work to fully fund public education, including special education at the state required level. If special education is funded at the 92% requirement, local school districts can stop using their general funds to make up the shortage to SPED. This would ultimately help lower the mill levy that a school district would have to collect. Public dollars belong in public schools.

Common Sense Gun Safety

I own guns. I support the Second Amendment. We've got to work together to reduce gun deaths and keep guns away from kids and criminals. We have a Constitutional right to bear arms. We have a responsibility to our families,

Right to Control Medical Decisions

Politicians should not come between Kansans and their doctors. Your medical decisions are are yours.

Data Centers
I oppose unregulated date center development. SB 98 gave large data centers a 20-year sales tax exemption without enough protections for the communities where they are built. Those tax breaks should be repealed.

At a minimum, developers should be required to disclose their expected water and electricity use, face penalties for exceeding agreed limits, and pay for the infrastructure they require instead of passing those costs on to ratepayers.

Most importantly, local communities deserve a real voice in whether a data center is built and under what conditions. These decisions should not be made behind closed doors.
